Illinois 5Essential Survey

You are invited to participate in the eleventh annual statewide Illinois 5Essentials Survey. This survey is designed to generate a detailed picture of the inner workings of your child’s school. As a parent/guardian, this opportunity will allow you to share your thoughts on the important elements of school effectiveness in a survey about your child’s school.

On behalf of the Illinois State Board of Education, the 5Essentials Survey will be administered online by UChicago Impact at the University of Chicago. The survey gathers data related to five indicators that can predict important student outcomes, including improved attendance and larger test score gains. These five indicators that affect and predict school success are:

  •  Effective Leaders
  • Collaborative Teachers
  • Involved Families
  • Supportive Environments
  • Ambitious Instruction

Prior research in more than 400 schools has shown that schools that were strong on at least three of these “5Essential” indicators were 10 times more likely to improve student learning gains in math and reading than those that were weak on three or more Essentials.

Your participation in the parent portion of the survey will help us understand the conditions at your child’s school and guide improvement. Your identity and survey responses will be kept completely confidential and will never be connected to you or your child.  To take the survey please visit https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/ and select the appropriate survey to begin.

For more information about the Illinois 5Essentials Survey, or to view previous years’ Reports, please visit https://www.5-essentials.org/illinois. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact UChicago Impact Survey Support at 1-866-440-1874 or impact-surveys@uchicago.edu

The Teacher Experiences Raffle

To raise money for potential fun activities at Highlandpalooza this year (think BOUNCE HOUSE, FACE PAINTER, OR BALLOON ARTIST)
our generous teachers have offered some fun in school experience prizes for our kids! Pizza, boba, ice cream, games, be a librarian for the day, or a fun special hangout with your kids favorite staff members!
The more money we raise, the more games and activities we'll be able to have at this family favorite event in May.

Each ticket costs $1 and kids can buy as many tickets as they want. Send them to school with money, the office will sell tickets, and they can choose the prize they want to try to win with their tickets!

The raffle will take place over the next few weeks ending Friday, February 27th.
Winners will be drawn in school by Dr. Bradley.
Good luck!!! Thanks for supporting Highland!

HIGHLANDPALOOZA TIME !!

Highlandpalooza is just a few short months away, so we are kicking off planning now to make sure the event is a success! We need your help! We are forming planning committees for all aspects of the event.  CLICK HERE FOR INFORMATION ON COMMITTEES AND SIGNING UP to help. We have divided the responsibilities into manageable groups so the lift is not too great.

Highlandpalooza is our big carnival and fundraiser help near the end of the school year. It includes a carnival with activities, entertainment and food, as well as a silent auction to help us raise money for the event and PTA activities throughout the year.

We cannot do this without strong parent participation and support. The more help we get the better Highlandpalooza will be!

Skokie Public Library Connections

The Skokie Public Library is hosting these and many other family-friendly events this winter.

Relax and Read
Friday, February 20, from 5:00 to 6:00 pm
Pick up a lantern, seek a spot of refuge, and brace for a spooky video projected onto a wall. Lights will be dimmed, and a chapter will be read aloud from a scary novel. Then, kick back, relax--if you dare, and read a book of your choice. Kids age 8-12 attend on their own.

Family Service Project
Saturday, February 21, from 12:30 to 1:30 pm
Families can drop in as the Chicago-based nonprofit organization Akin for Action leads activities to build toys for animals at the animal shelter. Children younger than eight must be accompanied by an adult.
